What you need to know about Microsoft 365 E7
20th March 2026

A practical guide to Microsoft’s new AI-first licence.
Microsoft’s launch of Microsoft 365 E7 marks the biggest change to its licensing model in over a decade. Designed for what Microsoft calls a “human‑led, agent‑operated” workplace, E7 brings productivity, security, identity and AI governance together in a single, top‑tier licence.
Microsoft 365 E7 is aimed at organisations ready to move beyond AI experimentation and adopt secure, scalable AI across the business.
What is Microsoft 365 E7?
Microsoft 365 E7 bundles four core capabilities into one licence:
- Microsoft 365 E5 – productivity, security and compliance
- Microsoft 365 Copilot – AI built into Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams
- Microsoft Entra Suite – advanced identity and Zero Trust controls
- Microsoft Agent 365 – governance and security for AI agents
E7 shifts Microsoft 365 from ‘AI as a feature’ to ‘AI as an operating model’, where people and AI agents work side by side.
What makes E7 different from E5?
E5 already provides enterprise‑grade security and compliance. E7 goes further by introducing AI governance as a first‑class capability.
Key differences at a glance
- Copilot is included
In E5, Copilot is a paid add‑on. In E7, it’s built in by default. - Agent 365
A new control plane for AI agents, non‑human workers that can perform tasks, access data and trigger workflows. - Full Entra Suite included
Includes Privileged Identity Management, Identity Governance and Zero Trust Network Access – features that normally require separate licences.
E5 secures users and devices. E7 secures users and AI agents.
How much does Microsoft 365 E7 cost?
Microsoft 365 E7 costs $99 per user per month and is available from May 2026.
It offers around 15% savings compared to buying each component separately.
AI usage and compute costs are not included and are charged separately based on consumption.
Is Microsoft 365 E7 right for my business?
E7 is not designed for every organisation and that’s intentional. Its best suited to organisations that:
- Are already using E5 or E5 + Copilot
- Plan to deploy AI agents for automation or decision support
- Operate in regulated industries (finance, legal, healthcare, SaaS)
- Need strong identity governance due to remote or hybrid work
- Want to scale AI safely, not experimentally
Many organisations will adopt a mixed model, with most users on Business Premium, E3, or E5 and a smaller group on E7.
Why you should pay attention now
Microsoft 365 E7 is a clear signal of Microsoft’s direction: AI agents, identity‑first security and governance built into everyday work.
Even if E7 isn’t right for you today, understanding it now helps you:
- Plan future licensing strategy
- Avoid fragmented AI adoption
- Stay ahead of security and compliance risks
